PCD diamond, the hardest and most resistant material in the world, is produced by sintering together micron-sized diamond particles at ultra-high pressure and temperature in the presence of metallic catalyst. Since its development, PCD diamond has found widespread application in numerous machining and wear part applications. A number of grades of PCD have been developed to provide the optimum combination of properties for different metalworking applications. Diamond content and diamond grain size distribution are carefully controlled to provide the correct balance of wear resistance and toughness. Recent advances in manufacturing technologies have led to the development of PCD grades with superior abrasion and chip resistance without significant loss in electro-discharge machinability or grind ability.
PCD diamond cutting tool application:
The principal applications for PCD include the machining of nonferrous metals, alloys, graphite, fiber glass, composites and reinforced plastics. The single largest application area is the machining of aluminum silicon alloys in the automotive industry. Despite being limited to operating temperatures of 730˚C or below, PCD has also been successfully used in machining of cast irons; One noteworthy application being the milling of bi-metal engine blocks with grey or compacted graphite iron liners. More recently, PCD has started to grow in popularity for milling and turning of titanium alloys and precision finishing of grey and high strength cast irons. Other applications where the extreme hardness and superior edge quality of PCD is advantageous include ceramics and tungsten carbide; both in the green and sintered states.
PCD diamond cutting tool types:
Generally, the PCD diamond cutting tools include two kinds of types: PCD inserts and PCD rotating tools. The PCD inserts include the ISO standard and no-standard inserts. The PCD rotating tools include PCD reamers, PCD milling cutters and PCD drills. All of these PCD tools are used to meet the high accuracy and high efficiently demand for turning, milling, boring and drilling application.
